Yea… I know this isn’t “new” news… but the announcement yesterday for the actual release date reminded me that I had written this strip back in September of last year.
All this got me to thinking about when I was a kid and how awesome I thought it would be for Star Wars to be in 3D. Now, the thought just churns my stomach.

Not sure how to feel about this. I’m glad they will all be in theaters again, but if they weren’t shot in 3D to begin with, they won’t be too spectacular.

You know what the worst part of this is? Phantom Menace 3D is going to be released sometime in 2012.
This means, the Mayans were right. The world is coming to an end.

It’s hard to get much reaction to this. The Phantom Menace is a bad movie with a pretty cool pod-racing scene and a cool battle between Darth Maul and Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. If you are not against 3-D in principle, adding 3-D to the movie could make the two good parts of the movie look better. This doesn’t get to the point of stomach churning for me, because it’s not like the movie was a masterpiece to begin with. It was always a bad movie.
What is potentially stomach-churning is the fact that the addition of this technology will provide George Lucas the opportunity to “tweak” the films yet again and add more gimmicks to the films, which showcase the 3-D effects. (Maybe this is what you were suggesting yourself.) This could be brutal when applied to the original trilogy. Even then though, it’s hard to get worked up about it. After we’ve had the “Special Ed” versions of the late 1990s and then the “ultimate ed” versions of the dvd releases, it’s going to be hard for Lucas to add new sacrilege to top the damage that has already been done. Of course, I wouldn’t put it past him. He seems surrounded by sycophants who immediately praise any idea he comes up with, no matter how idiotic. What a rant! I must be a geriatric coot.
